Penang War Museum in Bukit Batu Maung is a fort built by the British in the 1930s. It later on gained significance when it became the site where the battle for Penang against the invading Japanese army was lost in the year 1941.

Said to be the first dam to be built on Penang island, the Air Itam Dam was also the first major engineering project by George Town's City Council. At 700 feet above sea level the area is said to create a microclimate space that is slightly cooler than more congested parts of the island.
